Philip Shaibu, the deputy governor of Edo State, stated that the Peoples Democratic Party's nominee for the September 21, 2024, governorship election will be decided by the court's ruling.
Asue Ighodalo, the party's nominee for the 2018 Edo governorship race, received a Certificate of Return on Tuesday from the PDP National Working Committee, which is chaired by Umar Damagum, acting as national chairman.
Remember that the PDP held simultaneous primaries in the state on February 22, 2023, from which two candidates, Shaibu and Ighodalo, emerged as the party's nominees for governor in the Edo elections of 2024.
Shaibu received 301 votes to win the primary, while Ighodalo received 577 votes to win the separate primary at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium.
However, PDP National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba said in an interview on Monday that efforts had been made to make reconciliation with angry party members after the governorship primary.
"What makes the party better is its ability to bring its members and issues together," he said. We follow that. Reconciliation is not a sprint; it is a continuous process. It's a full marathon. And we have already done so on several levels.
"I can tell you that there has been a serious start to reconciliation in Edo. And we realised that in order to win in Edo State, our party needed to cooperate. Not only because of our party, but also because of the people and issues that Nigeria is currently facing.Shaibu gave an explanation for his Wednesday visit to the PDP National Headquarters, Wadata Plaza in Abuja, saying, "Today is the day set aside for the collection of certificate of return for the primary winner." I know someone who showed up yesterday and was given—well, the judge will make that determination.
