One of the students kidnapped from Kuriga in Kaduna State's Chikun Local Government Area, Mustapha Abubakar, described how he managed to escape being held kidnapped by the bandits. He said that until the other pupils were startled by the bandits and were able to flee, he remained hidden like a snake in the forest.
Of the about 280 schoolchildren kidnapped 27 of them made it back to their homes.
There were both male and female victims among the abducted children, and their ages ranged from five to eighteen, according to reports.Mustapha Abubakar claimed in an interview with BBC Hausa that was carried in Kaduna on Monday that the bandits moved the children like a herd of cows.
We crawled and even walked in the forest. We were so thirsty that some of the females were getting weak and falling over from exhaustion. The criminals carried several of them up and mounted them on motorcycles.
Afterwards, we arrived at a sizable river, where we continued our journey after drinking some water. There was an aircraft flying above us. The robbers then ordered us to lie down and remove one article of clothing.
Even the bandits were exhausted. They had no other food, so they were consuming leaves and wild fruits. There was nothing to eat for us.
While driving, I noticed a brown bushes that looked like my trousers. Like a snake, I coiled myself inside and hid. I sat there till the silence was complete, after which I departed to go to the bush.
A little while later, I saw an old man who had difficulty walking. I inquired about a nearby way to reach the major road from him.

"I ran a marathon," I said, pushing through my tiredness since it was almost evening. That's how I eventually managed to escape," he continued, adding that he had arrived in the adjacent town of Gayan.
