The Nigerian Grammy nominee David Adeleke, better known by his stage as Davido, has opened out about the challenges he faced recording his Sony Music album.
Davido said his 2016 Extended Play (EP) debut, which he released in collaboration with Sony Music, to be a commercial flop.
Davido shared his experiences in the global recording industry in great detail in a recent episode of The Bridge Show.
According to Omo Baba Olowo, an alignment error between his creative goals and the label's direction was the reason behind the project's collapse.
Davido said that when his management company was writing songs for him, there wasn't enough creative freedom, thus it wasn't fair.
He said that after spending a year in Atlanta, Sony had gotten him to work with some of the top producers, but that the project had failed, so he had made the decision to go back to Nigeria. He says they didn't get his music, so he went back to his original producers, who did, and told them he wanted to write hit songs. This is how his breakthrough track, IF, came to be. "When I first arrived, they paired me with some producers, but it didn't work out. We released an EP under Sony, which was my first project—a 'failure, failure' by my standards.'" said Davido. It may be considered success by others, but by my standards, it wasn't.
