Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the director general of the World Trade Organisation, has urged the federal government to secure the release of the students kidnapped by bandits in the states of Kaduna and Sokoto.
Speaking on Tuesday in Abuja at the opening of the WTO-ITC 2024 technical assistance project for Nigeria, Okonjo-Iweala expressed her grief for the kidnapping.
She did, however, wish for the students' quick recovery.
"I am sad by the fact that hundreds of our schoolchildren and teachers have been kidnapped once more," Okonjo-Iweala said.
"I am unhappy because I am a mother, a grandmother, an educator, and I believe that the key to opening up financial opportunities is education.
"And I hope we can be able to recover them soon in Kaduna and Sokoto with the help of my brother's national security adviser, Nuhu Ribadu."
Recall that bandits recently stormed the Government Secondary School Kuriga in Kaduna's Chikun Local Government Area and kidnapped more than 200 kids. school at Gada LGA, Sokoto's Gidan Bakuso.
In a related incident, some 15 Tsangaya students were reportedly kidnapped by bandits in Gidan Bakuso, in the Gada Local Government Area of Sokoto State, with several more going missing.
