Jumoke George, a veteran actress, recently spoke openly about the difficult circumstances that led to her 14-year absence from Nollywood during an interview with Oyinmomo TV. During the conversation, she revealed the predatory tactics of some film business heavyweights who valued beauty and sexual favours over genuine skill. Jumoke, who has always been proud of her dark complexion, described how directors encouraged her to bleach her face in order to fulfil limited beauty standards. Refusing to comply with these requests, she received constant criticism and was eventually banned after a director plainly told her that she would not succeed unless she engaged in "removal of pants." The 59-year-old actress fearlessly revealed these harsh facts, shedding light on the darker side of the industry.
She said in parts;
My skin tone was not the only barrier I faced in this profession. The other reason I didn't get any parts or see the back of a camera for 14 years was that I refused to sleep around. They complained that my skin tone was too dark, so I told them to add lightning to the scene to make me appear lighter," she claimed.
You cannot make me do something I do not want to do. I'll be glowing with this skin till I'm old, and remember, black doesn't break. When CEOs demanded a relationship in exchange for a role, I began to struggle to get one. The strain was enormous, and there were more than 20 to 30 people.
Another problem was that if you dated one of them, broke up, and went on to date someone else, they would talk about you among themselves. I told myself that as long as God exists, I would not find myself in such a situation. "I had to do this to avoid becoming a pass-around among them."
