Gunmen kill herder, cows in Plateau
35 cows and a 17-year-old herder were killed by as-yet-unidentified gunmen in the Barkin-Ladi Local Government Area of the Plateau in Doruwa Babuje in Ropp District and Nafan village in Fan District. According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the criminals killed the herder by opening fire while riding motor cycles. During the incident, another herder sustained serious injuries. State Governor Caleb Mutfwang condemned the incident and urged the appropriate security agencies to find the criminals. The governor made this claim in a statement released on Thursday in Jos by Mr. Gyang Bere, his director of press and public affairs. Mutfwang insisted that his government would not support any act of lawlessness or killing of law-abiding, innocent people. "We completely condemn these acts of lawlessness that are jeopardising the state government's efforts to firmly establish peaceful coexistence among all citizens." Whether on their farms or elsewhere in the state, my administration will no longer put up with the senseless killings of defenceless people going about their lawful business. "I have instructed the security agencies to find and arrest those responsible for these horrible acts and make sure the victims receive justice," Mutfwang was cited by Gyang. Gyang continued, saying that the governor had urged women's and youth organisations, traditional and community leaders, and religious leaders in the impacted areas to work with other relevant parties to help the communities return to normal. The governor expressed condolences to the families affected by the incident and counselled the people of the state to reveal any criminal elements in their areas or risk facing the full force of the law.
