Dele Farotimi is arrested by police on charges of defamation.

Dele Farotimi, a Nigerian human rights lawyer, has reportedly been arrested by the Nigeria Police Force. According to reports, Farotimi was arrested on Tuesday following a suit filed by UBA Group's Tony Elumelu charging the lawyer of slander. Omoyele Sowore, a 2023 presidential contender for the African Action Congress (AAC), alluded at Farotimi's detention in a post on his official X handle on Tuesday.

He stated, "I just learnt that Dele Farotimi was arrested by the Nigerian Police following a plea filed by Tony Elumelu of UBA Group stating Dele defamed him. It is critical that the Nigerian police are informed that the institution cannot continue to be used to settle personal scores, and that we, the people of Nigeria, will no longer allow such a condition. As a result, the police in Lagos' Zone 2 are advised to promptly release Barrister Dele Farotimi. Farotimi previously claimed that Nigeria Police Force officers had devised a scheme to kidnap him in Lagos. He accused the police of using deceptive tactics to apprehend him, despite his willingness to accept an invitation to the Zone 2 police headquarters in Lagos.

According to sources, Farotimi made the remark at a news conference on Monday. The public affairs analyst said that the police's activities were in response to a plea allegedly submitted by Afe Babalola, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN). On Monday, November 11th, 2024, I was notified that an invitation letter from the Zone 2 police headquarters had been delivered to my workplace," he stated. "The letter demanded that I report to the station on Wednesday, November 13th, 2024, at 10:00 AM. "On the specified date, at 9:45 a.m., I arrived at the station with my legal counsel. "At the station, I was presented with a petition written by a lawyer on behalf of Mr. Tony Elumelu accusing me of defamation."
